Marine Mammals Program
Marine Mammal Stranding Response
Marine mammal strandings have consistently been documented throughout the Wider Caribbean Region, with some countries reporting an increase in the number of documented cases. However, the response to these strandings continues to be hampered by a lack of awareness and the expertise to adequately care for these animals.
We invite you to participate in a two day workshop, consisting of lectures, a wet lab and on the beach training, that will provide veterinarians with a core of expertise and tools to effectively respond to marine mammal stranding events in the region. The workshop will provide responders with the experience of expanding their knowledge about strandings including examining carcasses, species identification, safety issues, what key information to record, what samples are important to collect and the correct protocols to follow.
Topics for training include the following
- Identification of marine mammal species including local field guides.
- An overview of cetacean and sirenian diseases and disorders.
- Sample collection, preparation, handling, transport and storage.
- Delivery of necropsy kits and discussion of necropsy procedures.
- Data collection and database coordination.
- Protocols necessary and hands-on training in on-site stranding methods and Assessment of local/regional coordination needs.
The lectures and beach training will be open to all conference attendees but numbers will be limited to 20 persons for the wet lab with preference given to Caribbean veterinarians so please register early.
